DESCRIPTION
The color of shallow water
Aquamarine takes its name from the Latin aqua marina, sea water, and no definition could be more apt: its transparent blue is exactly that of shallow water illuminated by the sun. It belongs to the beryl family — the same as emerald — and owes its color to the presence of iron in its crystal structure.
It has always been the stone associated with serenity and calm, and jewelers choose it when they want a color that stands out without imposing itself. This ring aligns three of them, all oval-cut and of identical size, in a trilogy — the three-stone composition that tradition interprets as a representation of past, present, and future, and which is among the most popular forms for important gift rings.
The March stone
Aquamarine is the lucky stone for those born in March. This is one of the reasons why this ring works particularly well as a birthday gift — but its vocation as a gift goes further: anniversaries, graduations, births, and confirmations are the occasions for which a trilogy with colored stones is most often chosen, because it combines the value of a designer piece with immediately recognizable symbolism.
The aquamarines
The three stones are natural and have a total weight of 2.01 ct, distributed in equal size: approximately seven tenths of a carat each, for a size of 7 × 5 mm. This is a generous size for a trilogy with colored stones, giving the ring a real presence on the hand without looking bulky.
The oval cut is not a random choice: it visually elongates the finger and, on a transparent stone of a delicate color like aquamarine, offers a large surface that lets light in and reveals its clarity. High-quality aquamarines are in fact judged more by their transparency than by the intensity of their color, and the oval is the cut that highlights them best.
With a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, aquamarine is a stone suitable for everyday wear, although it requires a little more care than a diamond.
The four diamonds
Between one aquamarine and the next, two pairs of natural brilliant-cut diamonds — four in total, for 0.16 ct total — create the transition between the blue stones. They are not just filler: their pure white provides a counterpoint to the color, and the reflections they generate keep the composition alive even in low light, when aquamarine alone would tend to fade.
Their G color places them in the near-colorless group, at the highest grade of that range: to the naked eye they appear perfectly white, without warm undertones that would disrupt the combination with the blue.
18 kt white gold
The setting is in 750/1000 white gold, that is 750 parts of pure gold per thousand: the highest fineness commonly used in jewelry, and the one that identifies a quality piece of jewelry in Italy. The band is thin and polished to a mirror finish, and widens towards the top to accommodate the prong settings that hold each stone, raising it from the structure.
This construction has a precise effect: the aquamarines remain open underneath, so the light passes through them from both sides instead of stopping on a closed back. This is why, on the hand, the stones appear brighter than their size would suggest.
The size
The ring is size 14, corresponding to an inner circumference of approximately 54 mm. It is one of the most requested sizes. To check yours, measure the circumference of your finger with a strip of paper and subtract 40 from the value in millimeters.
Jewelry care
Clean the ring with warm water, mild soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush, also brushing under the stones where creams and residues accumulate, dulling their transparency. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense heat sources and direct sunlight, which can fade the color of aquamarine over time, and remove the ring before using household cleaning products or doing manual work.
