Akoya pearls come mainly from Japan and, to a lesser extent, from China. They are cultivated in the Pinctada fucata (or Pinctada martensii) oyster, a smaller species compared to the oysters used for other types of pearls, such as South Sea or Tahitian pearls.

Main characteristics
Very high luster: it is their most famous quality. Akoya pearls have a clear and sharp mirror-like brilliance, often described as “mirror-like”.
Very round shape: thanks to the nucleation technique with a perfectly spherical mother-of-pearl, they are often almost perfect in shape.
Colors: the most common shades are white and cream, often with pink, silver, or slightly golden reflections.
Size: they generally range from 4 to 9 mm. The larger sizes (8–9 mm) are rare and particularly precious.
