Akoya or Japanese pearls
Oyster: Pinctada fucata martensii
Cultivation: The oyster is cultivated in seawater nurseries for a period ranging from 10 to 24 months. It is a low-yielding pearl-producing mollusk that accepts the grafting of only one nucleus at a time and can only withstand one cultivation during its lifespan. It is a small animal, capable of producing cultured pearls that tend to be small in diameter, but have exceptional characteristics.
The main producer of this variety of pearls is obviously Japan, but they are also cultivated in China, Vietnam, Korea, and Thailand.
Characteristics: Akoya pearls range in size from 2mm to 10mm, and their main characteristic is their roundness. In fact, spherical pearls account for nearly 80% of the harvest.
Furthermore, the surface of these pearls has few defects and is characterized by a remarkable luster, with a basic white color that can have gray, rose gold, or champagne reflections.
Shape, Size, Color, Luster, and Degree of Uniformity are therefore the classification parameters for pearls, allowing them to be divided into categories and simplifying their commercialization.
Fun fact: In their raw state, Akoya pearls are generally cream, yellow, or green. After being washed with special substances, the secret technique of which each manufacturing company keeps its own, they are whitened and take on silvery white or champagne pink hues, becoming more uniform in color.
The product is shipped with a box and an official Diana warranty valid for 24 months.
