Mazza - Fresh water pink pearl necklace - CL PERLA
Mattia Mazza necklace with pink pearls and 750 yellow gold clasp.
Freshwater cultured pearls are created thanks to a different technique from that used for the cultivation of saltwater pearls. In fact, to trigger the production of Fresh water pearls, a fragment of the epithelium of another oyster is inserted into the mantle of the oyster, and not a nucleus of mother-of-pearl as happens with other varieties of cultured pearls. An anucleate pearl will form inside the grafted mantle, i.e. without a nucleus and made up entirely of layers of pearlescence. Unlike marine molluscs, freshwater molluscs, after receiving the first implant, can continue to produce pearls for two or three consecutive cycles.
Freshwater pearls are mainly produced in China, but there are also productions in Japan and the United States.
The size of Fresh Water pearls is on average larger than Akoya and ranges from 2 to 13mm, while as regards colors they come in a variety ranging from white to purple through shades of pink.
