The “Akoya” pearl is cultivated in seawater in the mollusc of the same name, also called “Pinctada martensiide fucata”. Akoya pearls are the most famous among cultured pearls and are considered the classic pearls for creating necklaces and other pearl jewelry. Thanks to their perfectly round shapes, their bright and luminous luster, as well as their soft neutral color, Akoya pearls are highly successful in jewelry stores worldwide.
Akoya pearls have built their reputation on their aesthetic quality. Unlike their freshwater pearl cousins, Akoya oysters rarely produce more than 2 pearls per harvest. The oysters are nucleated with a pearl called a “mother pearl” that is introduced into the mollusc’s mantle. The use of a nucleus causes the oyster to subsequently wrap this foreign object in mother-of-pearl, preserving its initial shape. These pearls are classified into categories, and their value depends on these categories.
The Akoya oyster is the smallest pearl-producing mollusc, and for this reason, the pearls tend to be small. An Akoya pearl measures an average of 7 mm in diameter, while an Australian pearl measures an average of 13 mm. Cultured Akoya pearls measure between 1 mm and 10 mm, although the latter are extremely rare. Akoya pearls are round, although sometimes part of the harvest includes some baroque pearls and some Keshii, or seed pearls, meaning small unnucleated minor pearls. Akoya pearls boast a luminous, deep, and very brilliant luster that distinguishes them from other cultured pearls. Akoya pearls have soft neutral hues; colored ones have undergone treatment immediately after harvest. Their natural color is white with gray, pink, cream, champagne, or even silver reflections, and sometimes green. Akoya pearls are never naturally black, and to achieve this, they are dyed using an organic treatment that darkens the mother-of-pearl, which remains unaltered over time and does not fade.
